Types of Roofs
Keep in mind, the existing frame and roof on your home will affect your choices for renovation.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material, as they are effective in all environmental conditions. Asphalt shingles are available in multiple colors and textures to complement the aesthetic of your home. This type of roof is very affordable and generally lasts 20-25 years.
Wood
Wood roofing materials may be sawn (e.g., redwood shingles) or split (e.g., cedar shakes). Wood roofs are much more expensive than asphalt, and they last the same amount of time, 20-25 years.
Slate
You may see slate roofs on some of the historic homes in our area. Slate is durable and can last more than 100 years. It is high quality and, thus, more expensive than other roofing options.
Concrete Tiles
Concrete tiles are available in multiple colors and styles. Historically, tiles were made of slate or terra cotta, but molded concrete, tinted to the color of your choice, is the current type of tile available to you. Concrete roofs are durable and can last a century or more. Keep in mind that tile roofs are very heavy.
Metal
Metal is durable and practically maintenance-free. Many types use standing-seam application, with an interlocking seam between vertical metal panels. Metal roofs perform well in all kinds of extreme weather and are virtually leak-proof. They may be made of copper, aluminum, steel, or lead.
